'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing'
I keep thinking about this quote. I know the problems in Africa are vast and complicated, but I can't shake the notion that we, who are more fortunate, must do something. No matter what our belief, no matter how desperate the situation may seem, we simply cannot turn our back on these beautiful people. They still have hope after everything they have endured, still have faith that the Americans are coming to help them. If they can still believe in us, shouldn't we believe in them?

Hi Lucy,
This is Hali, Ida and Max Slobodkin's daughter. I was at a charity bazaar for LA Loves yesterday. I noticed the web address on my receipt and decided to check it out. I saw your link on the Artisans page and found your blog.
You are amazing! You could have chosen to do something a lot easier in life, but you have chosen to make a difference in the world. Your blog entires are inspiring and painful at the same time. Thank you for putting things in perspective - so often we spoiled Americans carry on about the most inane, pointless things.
I can't believe Duncan is 20, but we met ten years ago and he was ten then, so I guess he is all grown up now. I will never forget the kindness you showed to my parents. I think you knew that my father died just 4 months after my mother. The generousity and love one person can bring to others is a lesson we all can learn. I try to live that way as well.
Bless you for what you are doing. Your fight to have a world at peace and with bellies full will be rewarded. Please give my love to Duncan and Daisy and your youngest (sorry, I forgot the name).
Love,
Hali
